I need to get quotes for this soon. It does look more expensive than I thought it would be as well.

Do people recommend main dealers over independents as they think in the event of issues there is more recourse?

Depends how deep your pockets are. Main dealers are much more expensive than independent Volvo specialists. What usually happens more often than not is people get the car serviced/maintained at a dealer whilst its under warranty, but as soon as that expires, they go elsewhere.

You don't have to go to a main dealer to keep your warranty though. Independents can do the same at a fraction of the cost, but people are often under the illusion they have to go to the dealer. Sometimes people have service plans as part of a deal when they purchased a car. In that instance, it makes sense to go the dealer.

My vote is independent, especially for an older car. I don't like the dealer network near me (Lookers) and I wouldn't trust them. I know not all dealers will be the same, but I haven't had a pleasant experience with Lookers. I will not let them touch my car.
