Engine management light - oil pressure
2012 xc60 D5 r design
Polestar map done by Volvo 120k Full service history by Volvo and independent Volvo specialist. Hi guys. In a bit of a predicament and wondered if anyone can help me. I was driving on motorway and it was a clear road on the slip road. So I put it in sport and put my foot down to clear up any nasties in the system. The car is used by the mrs as a daily and does about 10-15 mins driving to nursery and work and then the return leg at end of day. Car went into limp mode. So got off the motorway and switched off engine. Waited a few mins and started back up. Everything back to normal. Whilst cruising at 70mph the warning message came up but didn’t go into limp mode. Tried to scan the fault with my cheap eBay scanner but it wouldn’t read fault code but would clear it. Taken the car I’ve got the garage cover with AA so called them who advised I take it to the garage. The garage initially thought it was the piston cooler solenoid but they’ve tested it on the bench and it’s fine. They connected an oil pressure gauge and read oil pressure at 2 bar at cold start up but as engine warms up it drops to 1.2 bar and that’s when the warning message comes up. Independent garage said the pressure should drop to 1.7bar and stay there. The garage are stumped what it could be. They did say it’s a bit loud at the top of the engine. The garage have put in some 10-40 oil instead thinking it might hold pressure better but the warning message is still there. Anyone has a similar issue. |

Well if the garage have fitted a mechanical gauge and measured the oil pressure then that doesn’t sound promising. Wear in the engine can cause low oil pressure such as worn main bearings but it could be as simple as the oil pump. I take it the turbo is in good condition. Has the engine been using any oil? You say they have tested the cooling solenoid so there are no faults for this, What led them to suspect that?
Have they changed the oil filter? Any signs of contamination in the filter? Is the filter housing nice and clean. With a mechanical gauge you can’t really argue and it’s grounds for digging deeper. Certainly sump off and check the oil strainer and pump. An oil sample will tell you if there is any wear going on.

thanks for the reply
turbo is good and car isnt using any oil. ive never had to top it up. im not sure what led them to this, given the car to them in blind faith as they are independent volvo specialists (rawse motors in bradford), they have been pretty good before and done 2-3 services for me. im not sure if they have change the filter but theyve changed the oil to slightly thicker oil to try. what scares me is that they mentioned an engine rebuild or new engine neither of which i dont have the funds for at all. |
