Is there much difference between a D4 or D5 engine when it comes to DPF issues? Living in Cornwall we don’t do much motorway driving.

Depends on the type of engine, whether it is a VEA 4 cylinder or the older 5 cylinder. How old is the vehicle?

Are you having DPF Problems? You don't need motorways or revs, just cruising along at 50 mph is ample for it to regenerate. If it gets cut short when you stop it will carry on in the next journey...

No not having issues. Not purchased a car yet.
I’ve just had issues with my diesel ford in the past and I think it’s due to a lack of motorway driving

I've got the 163PS D3 engine which got rebranded D4 in 2012 or 2013 when D3 became 136PS. Never had any DPF issues so far in 100+k miles.

It's important to recognise when the car is regenerating and let it finish. Unless you have something plugged in to the OBDII port telling you the exhaust is running at 600+°C the only way I've found of knowing is to run in l/100kms for consumption figures. under normal conditions this will show 0l/100kms on overrun, when regenerating this can be between 1.2 and 2.5l/100kms. You won't see this in mpg as the car only shows a max. 99.9mpg on overrun, 2,5l/100kms is 113mpg.

The A30 can be better than motorways elsewhere in the UK just not on a bank holiday weekend.

The A30 has been nothing but roadworks and closures for the last 2 years but hopefully it’ll be open again by summer

FWIW, I have the same engine (163/5cyl 2.0 D4), V70 Geartronic, owned from new. My useage is textbook "unsuitable", but I've never had any DPF issues. Total milage in 11 years is only ~57k. Most common journey is a 4.5 mile trip on 30-limit roads twice a day*, with the odd long trip. I use Tesco ordinary diesel, and oil & filter are changed every 12 months, regardless.

A colleague's box of tricks told me there was 27g of soot in the DPF on that day - no idea whether this is good or not.

OTOH a colleague had the 2.4 D4 in a XC60 of the same age and had a blocked DPF. His had twice the milage though.

* although I often cycle it in summer.

The volvo's DPF system is very robust and trouble free generally. Unless you buy someone else's problem car of course.
