seems to be a worthwhile thing to do.
Have power steering oil at the ready along with some other things lined up once weather improves |

The initial batch of fluid that came out was black and stank. It’s still black and will need more changes, however the whining noise has gone and the steering is smooth again - so was obviously the old fluid causing it. I’ll be getting a couple more litres and slowly renewing it over the next few weeks - letting the car get some use between changes. Don’t think it’ll ever be green again though! |

Here's a video that shows the flushing procedure.
Note, lift the car off the ground so the wheels can turn freely (don't start the engine, ignition in position 2 will do). Don't let the reservoir run dry.

You'll probably need another 2 litres of fluid at least for best results, based on how dirty it still is after a 1L drain and fill that you did. I opted to do the drain and fill on my Dad's V70, as I had no 3/8 pipe to go from the return line into a waste container (so I couldn't do the proper flush). However, I did remove the reservoir from the engine and gave it a good clean inside with brake cleaner, then proceeded with the drain/fill. There's a little filter inside the reservoir that can get surprisingly gunked up. Its worth taking the reservoir out to give it a proper clean. However, the hoses underneath the reservoir were a nightmare to get off. The guy in the video above makes it look simple, but in reality, those hoses can be a right pain on an older car. I guess his is a newer vehicle, so the hoses/plastic connectors aren't brittle yet. If you want clean fluid in one go, remove the reservoir from the car and clean it. Then do the flushing method shown in the video. You just need enough fluid on standby. If you don't fancy that, you can just do the drain and fill method like you have done, but it'll take several times to get it green like it should be.

Well... the fluid change and cleaning of the power steering reservoir in the V70 was only short lived. I wasn't expecting it to solve the heavy steering completely, as I'm well aware that the power steering pump was likely well worn at 163,000 miles. It was worth a try though, instead of it becoming a parts cannon. It did make a difference all the same, but its definitely the power steering pump giving up.
Whilst parking in a supermarket car park yesterday, I could hear the pump whining and making general weird noises that I haven't heard before. The steering now feels heavier than its ever been. There's still steering assistance (just about), but I think the pump is goosed. I checked the level in the reservoir and its still bang on, so no leaks. Has anyone replaced a power steering pump on a P3 before? Any idea of what it would cost at a garage to get it done labour wise? Thanks in advance. Edit: A Starline pump is £265 and a Bosch one is £460. Seems like a big difference in price? Has anyone used Starline before? Its 57 plate car, so I've got to be realistic with what parts to use based on the age of the car. I'm generally all for genuine or quality aftermarket at a minimum, but I dread to think what a genuine one would cost!

The Meyle pump is the one most of us use
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354604905758 They are really cheap now Obviously check part number is compatible with your specific car. Genuine Volvo pump is £600-700

I don't know what the part number is for my existing pump? Where can I find that? The pump seems well tucked away and its not easy to see part numbers with the belt etc in the way. On second thoughts... could it be the steering rack that's causing the heavy steering? I don't particularly want to buy a power steering pump and get it replaced to end up with heavy steering again! How do garages test if its a pump issue or rack problem?

A couple of years ago I had the same problem with my 2008 V70 2.4D with exactly the same symptoms as you.
Changing the fluid and reservoir (the filter is built into it) made little difference. It ultimately resulted in an MoT failure. I ended up having the work done at the local Volvo dealer and opted to spend a bit extra on a diagnostic pressure check which proved the pump was at fault. It was replaced with the Volvo item. Not cheap, but it cured the problem and I have had no further trouble since. I believe it's a bit of a pig of a job and didn't fancy having a go at it myself. Martin |

I think I'll let the garage do this one. I've looked at some videos on YouTube, albeit P2 power steering pump replacement. I'm not sure if the P3 is exactly the same, but it looks like a fiddly job and not something I'd be tackling myself. I don't mind doing small things like brakes or oil changes, but I leave the bigger repairs to the garage.
