D4 Excessive oil use, What engine???
Hi all, new to the forum and after what i thought was quite an extensive search, i had no luck in finding much info about this oil eating problem, (as ive heard it called elsewhere...) here or really anywhere online...
So apologies if this has been covered in detail on the forum, but if so it definitely wasnt easy found Basically i am thinking and am really close to buyin an s90, it will be a working vehicle as in a taxi, and after trialling a v90 for a week i am really impressed with these vehicles, but after having discovered this problem im hearing from 2018 on its solved, however i did come across an article with a 2019 having the problem, then some info pointing to US models only So my question probably is, is there any specific years or engine codes etc, that should be avoided or in turn, are the go to versions, or is it just buy low mileage, hope for the best and more or less suck it up when it happens, as i dont usually change every 2 or 3 years like alot of guys, My local diagnostic man always recommends stay German or Japenese and i actually have always been a vw/audi man, and being honest the s90 does seem pretty extravagant prucewise compared to the vw or even skoda equivalent, being honest I can nearly buy an equivalent year an miles new shape Audi a6, but after trialling a v90 they do feel like a real tough solid car, so the last thing i would need after goin that bit extra in order to avoid hassle is to end up with an abundance of it... So as this was the 1st UK Volvo forum i found after researching alot, I am lookin a little guidance so to speak, And again apologies, if its been covered previously but surely someone on here knows if this problem has been solved or not, or even has experience of 2018 on high milers at this stage, Many thanks in advance |

I would be more worried about oil consumption on the 2.0 diesel VAG engines.

As mentioned above, make sure the engine oil is changed frequently. If you're buying a diesel Volvo of that era, there's little choice. All of them are 4 cylinder diesel's with VEA engines. Its just the power output that changes between D2, D3, D4 and D5 for example... the engine is the same. They definitely need regular motorway trips. Don't buy one if you just plan on tootling around town with it, as it'll give you nothing but a headache with dpf issues etc etc.

I don’t know about mapping. I think DPF delete is illegal and an MOT failure.

It should do yeh, as when workin we would regularly see them, but if you mean a good long sort of kept up the revs sort of run as in what guys would do when tryin to clear a dpf then yeh she should have no shortage of that driving style, i hear alot of guys sayin stick to recommended oil then some sayin go a heavier vicosity, i take it its a stick to the volvo advice scenario then?

With regards to oil, use what Volvo specify. Don’t put thicker stuff in.
