D4 VEA ERG goodwill refused
My 2016 d4 vea with 70k miles has had repeated erg warnings since purchase at 50k miles three years ago. Erg has been cleaned, hose replaced. Volvo service from new, including first year with me and since two independent.
Knew what the error code was before taking to Volvo. Garage is Volvo specialist and he directed me to the dealer as he says this is a known issue and they should replace. Volvo uk said they would need to have the diagnostics done at the dealer (despite me already having code). £135+vat later and same code is read (they’ve not looked under bonnet or done anything further) and Volvo have contacted me to say zero contribution, circa £2k replacement if cooler needs replacing too. I feel extorted. Why have some been given contribution on older mileage cars without full Volvo service history? Why could they not give me a decision based on the error code? Why did I need to pay them £150 for the privilege ? BMW have recalled and done as part of process. So frustrating. So far, this car has had two major water leaks and now this. Wouldn’t touch Volvo again. |

With regards to the diagnostic fee, that's pretty much standard practice nowadays. A dealership usually won't take heed on what another garage has diagnosed, hence why they diagnose it again. As soon as the dealership hooks that scan tool up, there's a charge. All dealerships do it, not just Volvo. I hope you find a solution, but I'd be inclined to try another dealership if possible or complain to Volvo UK.

Volvo have stopped any goodwill on these, I was informed by a Volvo dealer manager at a dealer day. In the early days of these failing where they offering goodwill at nearly every failure. The car is 2016 it’s 8yrs old and that’s what it comes down to although it is still outrageous really. I was also told volvo have fixed the issue, they no longer produce diesel cars………. Well make of that what you will……. You won’t be the only one or the last. This fault still happens on cars much newer.
You say the EGR has been cleaned, did this include the cooler? The valve may be free and that is easy to test without any disassembly but the cooler is more than likely blocked. You could replace just the cooler if the valve is free and clean to reduce your cost and it’s not a difficult job.

You mention a couple of services have been done outside the official network. That is their get out.
It's an eight year old car and these issues with the four cylinder D4 have existed almost since day one. At some point Volvo cars will stop with the goodwill and not keeping it serviced within the network is the opportunity to stop that support. It doesn't help you, sorry, but I suspect that is how they will look at it.
