Yes, I’ve had an Emovis tag for years and it works perfectly. It’s meant to be positioned in the black area in front of the mirror but there isn’t such an area in the xc90 so mine is at the top of the screen on the passenger side adjacent to the sensor housing in front of the mirror.

We got a Bip n Go one last year from https://www.bipandgo.com/en/ - we have a heated windscreen and although we put it in exactly the same position as noted above, we found that it didn't register properly in France. We ended up having to roll down the window and wave it out before the barrier would raise. There was no problem in Italy though - it worked fine through the windscreen.

We also have an Irish transponder for use at home (removed and in a metal shielded pouch for the continental trip) - this works fine behind the windscreen too. So I guess the message is that some tags are better than others and that might be an issue if you have a heated windscreen.

I've used an emovis tag before with no issues in the windscreen of my V90 CC with heated windscreen. I've used it stuck onto the windscreen just to the left of the rear view mirror cluster, and the second time I was in France I just attached it to the windscreen at the top far left.

The detectors are placed pretty high and seem to be able to pick it up as long as it's somewhere around the windscreen

Had one of these all the time we lived in France as always had a right hand drive car. Affix to windscreen just under the mirror. Never had a problem although it was pre Braxit.

I've had an ATMB tag for years, pre and post Brexit, and it continues to work well. Unlike some of the telepeage tags this company only charges the monthly admin fee for the months I actually use it and it's charged the following month to my UK credit card.

So to answer my own question, we went with a Bip n Go tag. Worked fine in both France and Italy last summer.

Remember to switch off speed camera locations in your satnav when in France, as that's against the law over there.

Good point. Sensus satnav does this automatically. I assume same for AAOS cars?

Use Waze. It states either there are police or average speed check zones. Enough to get around the law. Not that I have ever been stopped to check this.

And to answer the original question, anywhere vaguely towards the top of the screen seems to work. I’ve used in a Clio and an XC90 so given the differing heights, I can’t imagine it’s that sensitive.
