Red face 03 V70 D5 Cooling issues

Out for a drive today (around 1 hour) and about 5 minutes from home engine overheating warning (temp gauge just before the red). I stopped the car, key out for about 2 minutes and put the key back in to check temp. Temp was fine.

Drove the few minutes back home and turned off the car. Coolant normal colour and level, engine did not 'feel' too warm with the cover off however top rad hose was lukewarm at best and lower hose was quite warm.

The coolant was recently removed for a clutch job however it was put back in and bled from what I know. It did need to be topped up the day after although not too much. I released the bottle cap, turned heat up to max and started the car to let any air bleed out and the coolant started very slowly frothing out of the bottle. Left it like this for about 5 minutes catching any of the overflowing froth and now the air blowing out of the fans is cold!?

I have the car cooling down now and will check levels in a few hours once fully cold but any help would be great!

Does sound like an airlock...

Did the heater (not using air con) get hot? If not, this is classic airlock symptom.

I'd be tempted to re-bleed the system: once the thermostat has opened (you'll see the coolant swirling in the tank), squeeze all the hoses you can find (watch your fingers on moving parts) and take your time. It can also help to raise the front of the car when getting rid of trapped air.

Speaking from experience, it can take several attempts to get rid of the air in the system once its got trapped.

I've not yet had to mess around with the coolant in my XC70, but I've found the above tends to work on most cars.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, when I had the fans blowing with temp maxed out I didn't put on the aircon. I will try bleeding the system again tomorrow and hopefully get some good results!

I'll post an update when I have one for the thread.

Is the system pressurising at all?
Top hose going hard etc?

Yes the system is pressurising, opened the expansion bottle cold the next day and it released alot of pressure.

Tried to burp the system yesterday by opening the cap and running car with heat on full blast, coolant level has stayed the same after some driving last night and this morning.

Still not sure what has happened but heat in the car has come back slightly although nowhere near as warm as it should be

As mentioned above by Faust, I'd re-bleed it in the first instance. You could have a dodgy thermostat.
