D3: Cold start Video, No visible smoke, Some short sound?
V70 D3 D5204T7 engine with 160 kMiles. No problems, car runs great!
I was curious how does the cold start look at -8 °C, so made a video. Unbelievable, but there was no visible smoke whatsoever upon start, which I believe must be a sign of great condition of fuel system (tank filled with Shell V-Power). I was expecting at least something, like water vapour... But, nothing visible! Recentlly my everyday car was 855 TDI with 367 kMiles, so I was used to smoke upon cold start... Please comment the "no visible smoke whatsoever" But, there was a short sound upon the very start itself, lasted for a second at 0:22 What could that sound be? Fuel pump? Is that normal or too loud? I've never heard/noticed it before. It cannot be heard from the inside... https://youtu.be/pZv-xAyuii8?feature=shared Thanks.

My D3 S80 makes the exact same noise. I’ve owned it since 30,000 miles. Made it then makes it now. I’ve wondered if it’s the starter motor bendix retracting as it happens right on fire up but I’ve never bothered investigating further. I’m certain it’s nothing serious. Only ever happens on cold starts as well .

Yep, my old 2011 V60 D3 did this exact same thing, and my 2012 D5 XC70 does it too but to a lesser extent.
Never found out what it was on the V60 and it did it for 125,000 miles so I filed it under "this is obviously fine" and haven't worried about it on the XC70. |

So, not every D5/D3 you've owned had this "sound"?

Non of the various D5s I’ve had over the years have made this noise until I got the D3 S80. In this recent cold spell it’s started easily at well below freezing and didn’t make the sound tho when it does it’s normally when the car has been stood. I may well be perfectly normal.

My V70 stood for two days before I recorded the video. Never looked at that before, so I don't know if the sound appears every time. Will check.

Yep my S80 D3 did this too, as did the V60 D3 I had as a courtesy car - as someone else said filed it under "this is OK".
