Default Sudden engine leak

My 2005 C70 has been sat off road for the last 6 months. Today, after our main car died a total death I decided to get it back on the road.

All was going great, tyres reinflated fine, it started up and I drove around the block and the brakes were fine...Happy days.

I then realised that it was out of water so started to fill it up and could hear see some water under the car. I started it up and drove 200 yds to see how bad, suddenly there was a loud bang. Nothing appeared to change, didn't lose power etc but when I pulled up and checked under the bonnet water was now being squirted out from the area highlighted on the image below. Note its not the join between the pipe and engine but the seal between the two metal parts of the join.

It was too late to get to a garage and I'm heading there tomorrow but would be interested to hear people's expert view on the severity. Am I looking at a probable cylinder head issue here?

The bit circled is the thermostat housing held in place by two torx bolts (which if memory serves can be a problem to get out) and sealed by a rubber gasket on the lip of the thermostat, below the thermostat housing is a temperature sensor, look for the simple answers before taking the whole head off.

Hi PJWhitfield

Thermostat housing can be replaced but the loud bang sounds very worrying.

Does the engine start and run OK (for a short time after you have put water into it)?

The image doesn't show a 2005 C70 engine. Is the image a generic one off the net or has the engine been changed?

If the car has been parked up throughout the cold spell with low or no antifreeze something may have split or cracked allowing coolant to leak away, both before during and after your latest drive. Firstly find and attend to any obvious leaks and beware of overheating the engine at any time. Good luck !

"I then realised that it was out of water so started to fill it up and could hear see some water under the car".

Hopefully it had not overheated ? If so hopefully you waited for the hot engine to cool before adding cold water ?

Indeed, there is a different type housing used on later petrol engines, and some 5 cylinder diesels, where the metal crush gasket between the housing can let go.

I replaced one on my '05 S80 2.0T which has an identical engine to the '05 C70. It was recommended to fit either genuine Volvo or Wahler who are OEM manufacturers (Wahler 4818.90D) and includes a new temp sensor.

For example:

...but try and source the Wahler or Volvo part if possible.
