Default Engine horsepower?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to know if a non-turbo B21A K-Jetronic engine (auto transmission) is 98, 107, 115 or 122 bhp?

B21As were apparently made in all these versions, and they seem to overlap by years in some cases.

Reg 12/78, model year 1979. My VIN is 2454 M 1 xxxx and the engine number is written in the V5 as 2454, i.e. same digits as the VIN. That can't be right, or can it?

Thanks
Peter

B21A is a carburettor engine , B21E is a k jetronic

the engine number is something like 346987 no letters

A 1979 europe B21A = 107 bhp @ 5250 rpm 170 nm or torque @ 2520 rpm

a B21E (k Jetronic ) = 123 bhp @ 5500 rpm and 170 nm @ 3500 rpm

Great info, thanks. B21E it is of course, I knew that .

If mine's 123bhp I can see why some people like the turbos and the V6s, although mpg probably suffers.

Any idea where I might find the proper engine number?

Peter

The B21E is a lovely crisp instant to respond engine still suited to our traffic conditions which are considerably slower than in 1979.

The engine number is stamped in the block just behind the Distributor , also on a white label on the timing cover at the top.

My B230E is well above adequate in today's world.

The 2.3L cars with electronic injection are, in my opinion, a "much nicer drive". They keep up with traffic more convincingly, the beefed-up torque curve plus the extra capacity plus the injection giving it a bit more torque all add together so they don't suffer in traffic.
The 2.1L cars with the electro-mechanical K-Jet can be thrashed around (with a manual gearbox) better than makes sense with such a small engine in such a heavy (by the standards of the day) car, but they're not as "relaxed" to drive.
