The adaptive lights on my previous 2 BMW's had superior edge/verge brightness.

The BMW's adaptive lights seem to maintain full main beam power and continually adjust the light towards the left side of the road whilst the Volvo seems to dip or reduce the output under the same driving conditions.
Would say they are acceptable on full beam. It is the dip beam where the performance is particularly poor.

Once adjusted up (to a point that I dont dazzle oncoming traffic), you get much better visibility when driving at night increasing safety for both you and others.

I place a piece of tape on the garage door where the headlight projects to so I know how far up I have gone and increase 1/2 a turn upwards at a time on both headlights to keep them level. On my first XC60, I'm sure I took them up about 2 full turns and never got flashed (went 3 to start with but I did get flashed a few times indicating they were too high).
Thanks. I will take a look. Dealer assured me they were set correctly. Getting a bit more throw will help, but the intensity will still be poor.

LED lights don't have any adjustment from the dashboard.

I said nothing about the dashboard, there are height adjusters on the headlight units themselves (i.e. one on the left headlight and one on the right headlight) that raise and lower the beam projection.

Yeah sorry about that.
Surely though that adjustment should be done on a headlight alignment machine and not played with by Jo blogs!
