What tyre sizes....?
Hi folks, my 56 plate V70 2.4 D5 185 has 225/45/17 on atm.
Can I put on 225/50/17? Also, can you mix, have 45's on the back and 50's on the front? Thanks...

Why would you want to do this ?
Do you you have the tyres available ? The rolling radius would be incorrect with 50 profile on a 225 and your speedometer would read incorrectly They may also rub Stick to factory spec John f |

The tyre checker says I can go 235/40 R18 if I had 18's I am assuming that's the R spec wheels, but if it can take those then I would be surprised if 50/17 would rub. But if ya don't think it would be any good twhn then I will not bother and stick to the harder to find original spec, thanks

HI again, what about a slimmer tyre, such as a 205, is that not allowed either?

The difficulty to this question is that there are 2 sides to the question.
1) CAN you do it safely etc. and the answer to that is I would imagine yes. The difference between 45 and 50 profile is not significant and is likely not all that difference between something such as an aggressive 45 such at AT3s, or deep tread tyres compared to 50 road going tyres. 2). The second issue is that handling will be altered slightly. And accordingly if you have an accident expect the insurance company to back out of the claim flat out. Many insurance companies will attempt to delay and minimise costs on a straight forward claim. When you have changed items/things they will have a field day. I would not do what you propose because. Firstly you will have a nightmare following an accident, and could have all sorts of stress at a time you don’t need it. Secondly there will be some minor differences in handling and in your Speedo calibration. Driving down the road on 50s at 30mph May well actually he 32mph. If you have a puncture or tyre failure the tyre supplier will likely fit the correct profile then you have mixed tyres profiles on a vehicle which really is a no no. I am sure you know not to fit 45 and 50 on the same axle as it could wear your diffs and gears etc. but personally I would go for the same profile all over. My own view is that the relatively small savings are totally not worth the risks and alterations. Tyres such as michelin cross climates are not cheap at all however I have had 40,000 miles from my previous set and as such I would tempted to look out for something like them and rotate them each 10k miles. |

you can save money ordering tyres online instead of paying the hiked up prices charged by tyre fitters
what I do is bookmark the tyres I like on black circles and check every now and then so see if they're doing a discount, I bought a complete set last time when there was a discount on still have to take them somewhere and get them fitted and balanced of course but it can be worth the saving instead of using seconds which I don't really like (but have done myself in the past) |
