Default 2005 V70 D5 6 speed autobox oil change?

Is it worth changing the 6 speed auto gearbox oil? I've read all sorts of conflicting info on this score. The car has done 168k and runs absolutely fine, but I wan't to try and keep it that way.

Hi.
You can never do too many oil changes on these transmissions .

^^Yes^^ Your 168K speaks to the quality of the unit.
However, transmissions are specced with clean fluid and hopefully designed with some capacity to endure wearing built in.
A drain & fill which exchanges 1/2 the fluid rids the unit of half it's dirt.

My first V70 had black fluid. There I did a full pump out to clear. It re-dirtied the new fluid more than just a bit and I lived with it. All good results.

My second V70 came with a 2-3 hiccough and the original owner had the fluid replaced completely at a dealership. The car had 70K and crystal clear red fluid. There, a software upgrade and a bottle of LubeGard (red) improved shifting a lot. It never got worse and I sold the car after 9 years+ of service @ 198K.

My current V70, a 2007, has been maintained at a middlin TDL (Transmission Dirt Level), just like the previous one. No need to seek perfection.

Thanks for the replies. How do you do a pump out to empty the torque converter? I'm sure it would be beneficial to change all the oil opposed to half of it.

Do a Google search for V70 gibbons method

I can't give any specific advice having never done it, but I have read conflicting opinions on whether or not it's advisable.. I'll let you research and make up your own mind

If it's still on the original fluid at 168k miles I'd be wary of changing all the fluid in one go,but would rather go for a series of "sump dumps" to change it out.

I have the same gearbox in mine, now @ 165k. It was OK before, but it's better after a series of drain/fills, so I'd say go for it!
