Thumbs down Soot filter full

XC 60 2014 Had msg on dash saying soot filter full so pulled onto dual carriageway and foot down. As soon as I done that I got another msg engine service management required and then straight into limp mode. Took to garage and they cleared codes and checked over even done a smoke test for leakes. No leakes found but I do have to put a glug of oil in every 2 to three weeks..
Same thing happened again a day later when foot down to overtake a car.
Any suggestions. I'm personally thinking worn rings but hopefully I'm wrong.

The soot filter full message isn't anything serious at that stage, But you should go for a drive on the road for at least half an hour or so at 50 mph, no crazy rpm needed. then it will burn the soot off ( regenerate) i assume you are doing short journeys in town ? If not then there is probably a fault with a particle filter pressure sensor or temperature sensor , The fault codes would guide a technician in the right direction..

The 1st time it went in and codes cleared were...
P00BC-00 Air flow too low
P250F-68 Oil too low
P2463-00 DPF Restriction Soot Accumulation
P24A4-00 DPF Restriction Soot too high.
After faults codes cleared DPF accumulation was actually quit low.
It would seem that these codes only appear when accelerating at speed.

It could be a damaged catalytic converter/ Particle filter unit restricting flow . It would be worth monitoring the particle filter pressure sensor reading when driving...

What's the best/cheapest reader to do this.
Also should I be concerned about the amount of oil I'm using. Since I bought the car in June I've done about 1500 miles short and medium journeys and used 3 to 4 litres of oil. Garage reported no oil leakes or oil in pipes etc. But did say faults could be down to crank/sump pressure. Would it be worthwhile getting compression test.

Presuming you have a 2.0 D4?

I can recommend a Bluetooth dongle with the Car Scanner app. The paid for version was about £5 from memory and gives lots of info

The best lower cost reader is probably the iCarsoft v2.0 which has volvo specific tools. It does graphs and saves data to print out and other useful things A compression test wont help with diagnosing oil consumption really. you could still have perfect compression with a broken oil control ring . that is a lot of oil being used.

Thank for the advice. I've just bought the next one up that does all cars just in case this car goes. I've also just had the orange engine light come on now. Not looking good now.

Now I'm confused...while waiting for the scanner to arrive I've driven the car a few times and just deleted the error msg that come up. Today went out and no msg at all and as far as I can tell car running fine. Although didn't want to chance giving it some welly just in case..Is this normal ?
