For a remanufacturer however paying the Labour rates they do it will cost so
Much as to not be viable. Accordingly remanufactured now a days really does so often mean degreased, new timing belt and off you go.

10,000 miles down the line you have leaking camshaft oil seals, etc etc etc all of which should have been replaced.

Getting a 40,000 mile engine with history is a go, as is getting a genuine rebuilt one, but many of these £1,800 reconditioned units really are just pressure washed….

In my opinion of course.
A lot of engine recon shops use very cheap pattern parts. The Ford TDCi 2.2 Diesel engine, which was in the Jag X Type, Mundano, LR Defender and Ford Ranger and blows up regularly due to oil pump failure is often sold as recon for around £1,500, but I've seen a lot of members on the Ranger forums complaining they only last 20-30k before the bottom end spins a bearing.

Sometimes I think it's best to just cut your losses and move on so I'd be in the scrap the car and buy something else camp.

Probably a bit defeatist but life's short and all that.

A hard choice, especially if you have a car you love and know the history of. I think I'd have to agree with you though.

If you do want to pursue the keep-and-repair option, and you have space at home, then the most painless way could be...
  • buy a written off car with a known good engine, have it delivered to your house
  • find a good mobile mechanic to fit the new engine (probably with 'box) , they are usually a lot cheaper per hour than a mechanic with premises
  • sell the remaining written off car on ebay, buyer collects. You can include your old engine & 'box in the sale, bearing in mind the block and ancillaries can still be salvaged.

Volvo Breakers Preston sometimes have engines out of written off cars

A D3 or D4 were about 2k + VAT. I'm assuming a D5 would be similar. They also quote £350+ vat to fit it

It was touch and go as to whether to scrap it, but I’ve elected to have a reconditioned head fitted. It’s expensive, but that way I’ll get the car back with new belts etc and it should continue a while longer.
Not sure it is the correct decision, but I looked at what I could get if I spent the repair cost + scrap value and decided I’d rather have my own car back, as something else may have equivalent unknown problems.

I hope it works out for you. If the rest of the car is strong you may well have made the right decision.

I guess I'm a pessimist as I know I'll fix one thing and something even more expensive will go bang!

I assume you haven't had any luck with Volvo taking any responsibility ?

The warranty from Volvo would only be valid if the car was serviced by Volvo again at the next service. So cambelt done in April 2021 would have needed a Volvo service in April 2022 to keep the warranty running on the work from what I have read.
