Default V50 2009 - fuel levels misreported even after new sender

Morning guys. I have a 2.0 disel 2009 V50 which for the last few months has been misreporting how much fuel it has.

Even when I fill it to 100% it will show around 70% or sometimes even 30%. Sometimes it will correct itself and show the correct amount.

Last week, I knew I had around a third of a tank, but the fuel guage was at rock bottom and the light was on. My car spluttered as though it was out of fuel for about half a mile before completely cutting out on me just as I was on a roundabout (typical, eh?). I got it recovered and towed to my mechanic. The next day it started it up just fine and showed the third of a tank I knew it had.

Since then he has replaced the fuel sender, but this has not solved the issue. Any ideas what else it could be, and why did it completely grind to a halt?
