P1800 horn relay
My horn has stopped working on my 1962 P1800☹️☹️. Steering wheel push never worked, just the leaver on the left. I understand there is a relay. Could someone tell me where to find it/ post a photo.
Cheers |

Not sure if you can use this, if your wires have been altered ?
My 61 also had a non function horn switch, that was replaced with a button on the dash It was the first thing I fixed = if you are in a emergency, there is no time to fiddle around for aftermarket switches, scattered around the dash. Here is your cars original setup = https://volvo1800pictures.com/docume...olour_V2.6.pdf |

Simon;
As shown in the linked Wiring Diagram for early 1800s, applicable I would expect, to your '62, the Hornswitch at the Steering Wheel activated the normal Lo and Hi "Signal" Horns, without a Relay, and a separate Stalk switch controlled an independent "Starktonshorn" by way of a relay. I'm not absolutely certain where this relay might be located, but I'd start looking for it at the electrical panel where VReg is also located, and even if the Straktonshorn is mute (or missing) at this time, the relay might give itself away with an audible click if you listen for it while a helper activates the stalk control (Ign ON!, no Ign is necessary for the normal horns, as can also be taken from the WD). [Tip: Wear hearing protection when working on Horns!] I believe that is the relay in question, mostly hidden here, under the Violett wires to the left of F1,F2. According to the WD, it will also have a lot of Violett wires going to it. Remember also that the published wiring color codes are your friend! Good Hunting! |

Thank you
Thanks all for the input- brilliant as ever.
Mike, your time on the phone was invaluable. Keeping it simple and checking the earthing route I found the purple wire going up the steering column and through the rubber donut- no breaks BUT the earthing strap over the donut was broken. That’s what it was😀😀 Mike, if it wasn’t for our call I wouldn’t have understood how it worked! It has been messed about with: The Country horn is missing though the the leaver only operates the Townhorn on the left. There are No wires to the steering wheel centre button. So still some more work to do, but at least it’s back to where it was when I bought it. |
