What is the part number on the oil they gave you? Or does it say the oil is recommended for the chain gear in the Volvo XC90 6 cylinder AWD 03-06 on the tub? If so then it is the wrong stuff and is like water. We have been having issues with this over in the 7/900 section as the M90 is a RWD version of an M56 it should use the same oil. The stuff the dealers are selling for the M90 is not suitable at all and made my gearbox whine in 1st and sound like it had a bag of nails in it in 2nd on overrun! The gear changes became very stiff and clunky too. Drained it and put in redline MTL 75W80 and the overrun noise has all but gone (converted from dual mass to solid flywheel so there will be noise) and the gear changes are much smoother. My mate with an all original 940 on 208k miles decided to change his gearbox oil (it was perfectly fine before the oil change) and got the same stuff as me from the dealership and it gave his a pronounced whine in 1st and bad changes so he also drained it and went for the redline stuff and it has cured his issues.

I believe they no longer stock it at the dealers as on they phone they said the part number had been superseded. However I need to do a gearbox oil change for a customer soon so I'll quote that part number (pretty sure that's the one I gave them anyway) and see what they say.

I got round to changing my (manual) gearbox oil today, and the oil was quite dark/dirty looking. The gearchange feels quite a bit smoother. My car has done 125k miles.

Beforehand I was a bit unsure whether it was worth doing, but on reflection I think it was.

I changed the manual gearbox oil in the C70 a couple of years ago - for no other reason than I could. At 18 years and 60,000mls I thought it perhaps needed doing - it was worth it.
