Default sat nav xc90 2013

as you all know xc 90 has a sat nav , but i asked the dealer about up dating the sat nav i know you need a cd to put in the system under the passenger seat, they told me they only did the cd up to 2017, and they wanted £130 pound for it but he did say it was not worth it , so what i want to know is there anyway it can be updated other wise as he said to me as new roads appear they will not show on the sat nav as anybody have an idea if you can update it another way

The only way to update the satnav is to insert a DVD containing the wanted maps. Normally, people want to update to the newest (current) map editions.

Original map DVDs are sold by the dealer.
Copied (pirated) DVDs can be purchased through the grey and black market.

A 2013 vehicle uses a hard-drive based nav, the data is copied from the DVD to the hard-drive. Following the update, the DVD must remain in the nav unit as proof that you own the DVD (Because otherwise one DVD could be used to update 1000 vehicles).

Whether the updates have any impact on you is totally dependent on where you live, where you drive, and what changes were made to the road network in those areas.

For me, in Switzerland, it was totally worthwhile, as it added new motorway pieces, and new suburbs in my local area. But you do not live and drive where I live and drive.

I wrote a post about the update procedure, you can read it to find out how to check your current map version.
Once you know your current map, and considering that releases were published every two years, you will have some idea as to how big a version jump you would get with an update.

All good advice above. I have a 2012 XC90 and updating to 2018 was ok however it’s got nothing like the convenience or usefulness of Apple maps and I now don’t use my navigation any longer.

As a general point, Apple and Google maps have now been developed so well I think they are much better then any car manufacturers own effort - which is why Volvo dropped their own systems a few years ago to use Google maps instead.

My wife has a 3 year old Golf with Apple CarPlay and we always use Apple maps via CarPlay instead of the Vw system which is just irritating in comparison.

Unfortunately all that isn’t helpful to Mk1 XC90 owners where CarPlay upgrades aren’t an easy option…
