Sounds plausible - if you really think it's dud, could be worth trying a clean. BE REALLY CAREFUL doing that as they are so, so fragile, best not to rub or even touch the little wire at all, but remove and gently spray contact cleaner on it and let it dry off.

Only do this if you are confident it's fubar anyway, nowt to lose at that point. Would have expected a code to be thrown for a duff MAF though.

It doesn't throw a code when it's disconnected, let alone if its a dud, hence why I disconnected it.

VIDA can also test the MAF to see if it's working or not, maybe someone down there knows a good Volvo indie that has VIDA and knows these engines - might save some coin playing swap the part.

So, an update on all of this.

I have now also changed the MAF sensor and the swirl flaps (clearing out all the carbon rubbish as well.) no change, the engine runs a lot smoother, which is great, but still down on power.

I am also noticing a rattle. only under load, which has always been there but I just assumed it was the heat shield. When you rev the engine you can not create it, it is only under load. Floor it and you get a rattle but it sounds like an exhaust right in front of the driver, if that makes sense.

I don't really know where to turn next....

I am booking in at Horton Cars next month but if I can resolve before then that would be a bonus.
