Volvo 940 oil leak around oil cooler
hello, i have a 1998 940 lpt (b230fk) that is leaking a lot of oil and smoking around manifold.
it was leaking a lot especially around the oil cooler and filter area and i did the glove over the oil cap trick and so i replaced the whole pcv system and its still leaking around the oil cooler bits not as bad but still alot and seams to be spraying on to the manifold which is causing alot of smoke. it does have awful fuel in atm if that makes a difference and oil filter has been changed about a month ago. do you know what the gasket part number are? or anything else i should do video if it helps https://youtu.be/vyNIFnCziXY thanks for all the help |

That is a serious leak!
Is the oil filter on tight enough? The seal that goes between the cooler and the housing is 3547188 You would be best off cleaning all of the oil off as best you can, make sure the oil filter is tight and then start it up and see where it starts leaking from, judging from the state of the underside it won't take long to become apparent where it is leaking from! |

Are you sure its leaking from the oil cooler? Another place where you can get a lot of oil leaking is the turbo oil return pipe o-ring.

Its dripping off the oil cooler water pipes, how its getting there is hard to see. You really need the car up on stands, and/or take everything apart and inspect it.
The rigid turbo oil drain upper (gasket) or lower seal (rubber ring) is a classic area to get a big leak if not done correctly. The rubber ring is especially easily damaged. So take that off first and inspect it, you'll need to remove the wategate actuator usually, unless you have gadget fingers Having said that it would normally drip form the sump as it pours out from the low end of drain pipe. Its very hard to tell anything from the video, the camera is moving too much and there isn't enough context to work out what I am looking at. I'd concentrate on the smoke you see at the start, that seems to be comming from above the turbo, is the oil feed pipe on tight with the washers both sides of the union? Is the oil feed union on the block ok? Maybe get it up on stands. It will be a simple problem. I just replaced my oil cooler, they are a bit tempremental for leaks, but not that much. |

It all sounds like the turbo oil return to the sump. There is a special o-ring sealing this. It was probably disturbed when the head gasket was done and not renewed. Part number 1306264.

You need to look at the high pressure line from the block to the turbo. Its a rigid line and hard to get to with everything assembled. Then the oil filer and cooler are also high pressure. The hard turbo drain pipe is not high pressure, but it can leak alot. Oil will be very hot with the engine running, thats not abnormal. Engines run at 90C in the water, oil is usually hotter, hence the water-oil cooler. Last edited by TonyS9; Jan 7th, 2022 at 17:03. |

got under it today and you guys were right, the oil return from the turbo was barely in the hole to the sump and the gasket was split in half ,made a makeshift one out of two and instant gasket and it seamed to of worked drove 23miles and seams to be ok no oil light or smoke so hopefully that was it,
thank you for all the help
