Default Noisy PAS Pump

Cannot really help with solving your noise but at least can sympathise as I have been through similar.

Was getting a noise from the front of the engine, mainly when cold, and finished up changing the serpentine belt, both belt pulleys and finally the alternator.

Couldn't get hold of both pulleys and belt at the same time due to supply problems from Sweden so did it piecemeal, but each part changed didn't appear to be faulty but did seem to make a small difference.

In desperation I bought a rebuilt alternator, although the old one worked fine and I wasn't convinced that it was the cause. The noise has now gone but I still do not really know which component was faulty /noisy as each part, when changed, only made a small difference overall.

It was not as if the car had mega mileage at 136,000 miles and I had replaced the serpentine belt a couple of years previously, although I discovered the PAS pump had been changed by a previous owner for a used one from a 850 (labelled "850" in marker that breakers use).

It's incredibly frustrating having to change bits just on the off chance. I've fitted several bits to helicopters that have been 'Unserviceable on Fit' and they were fresh out the box. It could be a bit of this and a bit of that, I don't trust the 'new' alternator at all and the ebay seller has gone quiet when I told him the fitment wasn't correct.

Wednesdays job was to take the bumper off so a garage could try and pull out the towing eye after the unfortunate 'coming together' I had with a van.

The first bolt was so corroded it sheared off the mounting nut from the support bracket.

Which meant removing the headlight to try and hold the spinning square nut with a 17mm open ended spanner.

Figured I'd take both sides out so I could give the nearside a squirt of lube.

While the lights were out I removed the metal support thingy, gave them both a rust treatment and hammerite spray. This is before.

There's no after but imagine it less rusty and green.

Sadly the garage was unable to persuade the car to change shape even with his big hammer and supporting the front end purely from a jack. So it was bumper back on ready for the MOT friday at 8.30am.

And £@*( me what do you know, it passed, even with a face like a bruised turd.

Happy days.
