If the parking brake is not releasing completely or I have a sticking caliper (not noticeable under braking and no pull), do you think this could create enough drag to make it feel like the engine is over revving and the transmission is struggling? When it cruising in 4th it does feel like the RPM isn't high enough for road speed. Also makes sense that the issues are amplified when at full temperature if the brakes ect are expanding under heat.

But easy for you to confirm. Go for a 15 minute drive, then stop and lay your hand on the center of each wheel. With normal brakes, they should all feel about the same temperature. If one wheel is noticeably warmer than the others, then the brakes are dragging/rubbing, which of course will also cause higher fuel consumption.

So, just got off the phone with the local Indy who has driven the car and confirm that the transmission is not behaving as it should. Its been plugged in and registered a Transmission fault " gear range too short" (or something to that effect) and something to do with the differential. There is a software upgrade available for the transmission but they have phoned Volvo for more info on the fault before loading it in - I'll let you all know the outcome.

Morning All... Got the car back and it has come back with fault code P089500 " Shift time too Short" and also a fault on the differential module control pump. The recommended fix by my Indy is.. ATF change, software update, adaptions cleared, transmission teaching and if that doesn't work it'll be a transmission strip to investigate further. The car is 2.5 months into purchase and as this is the second major fault with 2 repairs being carried out on the first one I am within my rights to reject the car but this is a long process which will likely leave me without a car for weeks and possible out of pocket so I am potentially open to allowing another repair via the dealer.
Does anyone know the success rate of getting the transmission back to good working order using the above method or am I better off rejecting?

In my experience of a much older (2003) xc90 is that a good flush etc will greatly improve matters if not fix completely.
Mine is probably a much more problematic box and has had its issues in the past, but (touch wood) after two complete flushes in my ownership the last four years, the gearbox works fine. I have seen said that keeping the transmission oil fresh at intervals should keep the gearbox fine. Nb, mine is now close to 180k miles. So I would go with the service as described. Hope this helps.. The dealer are trying to get the transmission repaired with the updated software and adaptions cleared but there is also an issue with the differential. This car is immaculate inside and out but appears to have had a hard life in the 75K miles its done. I'm hoping the issues can be resolved as it's going to be a pain to get the money paid back.

Hi, so I am going ahead with the software upgrade and ATF change and adaptions however, the Transmission specialist cant do the software upgrade so the dealer are having it done at my Volvo Indy. Does anyone know if they can do the ATF change & adaptions before the software update or does this have to be done first?

No point doing adaptations before any software update.
You need to do them after the software update.

So, had the software update and they said it drove much better after but it still felt like it wasn't right to me so they put it into Thameside transmissions who found no codes and said it drove perfectly.
A month on and 1K miles later and I'm still scratching my head as to what could be going on with my car. Could it just be that this vibration and erratic revs/gearchanges are normal for a Volvo Xc90? Under smooth acceleration is feels like the car is over Revving and taking too long to change up - this is all accompanied by vibration through the footwell. Going up hill it shudders is if I'm driving on an uneven road surface. Once it level out and maintain a certain speeds all symptoms go away although it does feel like it needs to drop a gear sometimes to make the ride a little smoother. I love this car but its a never ending head ache!

I've just started reading this thread and I've got a couple of suggestions. Please forgive me if they've already been said, I haven't read all the previous 3 pages.
- You have the TF80 AWD transmission and a software update became available in circa 2015/2016 which improved a number of issues, so it is definitely worth trying. - Next time you think the car is playing up, move the gear lever over to the left and drive the car in manual mode for a while. In manual mode I think I am correct in saying that in gears 3,4,5 and 6 you should have torque converter lock at normal driving speeds for those gears - i.e. the engine RPM should be directly proportional to the road speed with no flare on increased throttle. Try that and see how it feels.
