wow, thanks for this

I'm having exactly same fault with my V50 2.0d

I've had all 4 suspension struts replaced recently as well.

garage have said drive shaft (but it checks ok) and/or gearbox differential bearing

Spent a fortune with them over last 7 months trying to sort this out

Quexstion marks over my usual garage now though as only last week they found rear engine mount gone (metal to metal) and they must have had car in at least 4 times since MOT in April

Thanks, will a take a look at mine as well, as expect that may be the issue since mine feels very unstable and pretty sloppy when steering as well as the steering wheel vibrations.

It passed it's MOT ~2 weeks back which I'm sure they'd be a failure on. Sadly I don't have much faith in most garages these days, so wouldn't be surprised if they missed it/didn't look.

Another sign that the rear wishbone bushes are worn is that the car's steering will try to follow cambers/ruts in the road surface without your input.

To update this, still no luck frustratingly.

It's now been to 4 different garages

- Wheel balancing is fine and has been checked multiple times
- 4 wheel alignment on a Hunter system done
- Tried another set of known to be good wheels
- All suspension components are fine apparently, including bushes
- Driveshafts appear to be fine

Vibration begins at 50mph and at 70mph becomes quite bad, I can't push through it and the whole car feels quite wollowy at speed.

Short of throwing money a set of driveshafts and endless other components I'm not sure what to do now.

Update in case anyone has similar problems in future.

Purchased an O/S driveshaft as that one had had more play in it than the N/S. Fitted it, took it for a test drive and the mechanic said sadly there was no real noticeable difference in the vibration but there was considerable play in the old one, so worth doing anyway I guess.

I bit the bullet and ordered a N/S driveshaft. He fitted that today and went out, apparently it felt like a completely different car, however could only get it up to ~60mph due to traffic (5pm rush hour).

He's holding onto the car again and will confirm tomorrow when he can get up to speed if it's fixed. Saying the front end felt so much better has got my hopes up though, so fingers crossed it's fixed.

What brand driveshaft did you go for?

A website called driveshaftuk.

A lot on the Focus ST forums used them with good results. Stay well away from J&R though, don't be tempted by the cheap shafts, they don't last, half of them don't even fit well.

Apart from Gen Volvo (Ford parts) at nearly £1000 there are little other options.

Further update to this, garage called this morning saying the vibration was gone, so I happily went to pick the car up and from 50mph+ on the way home the steering wheel started shimmying side to side again, vibration STILL there

Took car back to them and he drove it while I was passenger, we could feel it through the floorpan at ~70mph. He put the wheels back on the machine and showed me, they're all perfectly round and weighted.

So, what next? I'm another £680 down and right on the cusp of throwing in the towel on this Ford POS, unless anyone has any other ideas?

We've ruled out wheels, ruled out tyres, ruled out driveshafts, engine mounts have been replaced as has the underside gearbox mount.

What state are your track rod ends and are your brake discs definitely straight?

+1 to checking brake discs, warped set of rotors can cause similar issues as imbalanced wheels.
I personally managed to warp bad brand of rotors on my old S40 to the point where it was shaking whole car when braking (and only wobblying when driving).
