People just assume that as they have an AGM battery, stick the charger on AGM mode & away you go... not necessarily the case (can cause damage if this mode is used on a cheaper AGM battery). As you say, its important to read up on types of batteries & the instructions for your particular charger that you're using carefully. "Normal" mode will charge an AGM battery, but it'll just take longer.
