Default V60 1.6 drive thermostat (2011)

Think I may have an issue with the thermostat. Drove to work the other day (8miles) and noticed the fan was going full blast when I pulled up. Strange as it is freezing out. Opened the bonnet and the radiator and pipes are cold but the coolant reservoir is hot.

On successive days the fan has not come on but the rad and pipes are still cold. I’m aware the thermostat operates at close to 90C, but I’d have thought after 25mins and 8 miles the engine would be up to temp and be circulating.

I’ve got a point and shoot thermometer I can use to check the engine is 90C, so will do that as opposed to driving aimlessly for longer than my work journey.

Does thermostat sound likely? They are only £40. Where is the thermostat on my model? Can’t see it obviously? Any tips on swapping out?

Maybe the coolant has frozen stopping it from circulating. I would wait for warmer weather and see if it is ok, if so the anti freeze needs a stronger mix.

My previous car was a 2012 V50 Drive. On cold days the car could take 10 miles to get up to temp and then if in slow traffic, the temp would drop down again.

Dealer said there was no issue but I could never believe that it was right.

The fan running after shutdown may be an indication that the car was in they middle of a DPF regen. I assume yours is a 6 speed that doesn't need Eolys fluid?

No way the coolant was frozen. Recent good top up with antifreeze. Temps were low but not freezing.

And my V60 is a 5 speed. No idea what eolys fluid is?!

I think that confirms you've got a dry DPF the same as my V50 had. Mine ran the fans when it was regenerating and they could run on quite some time after shutting off the engine

The 5 speed V50 Drive had a wet DPF that used Eolys fluid during the regen. When they changed to the 6 speed, they moved to a dry DPF. That was my reason for asking as I'd assumed the drivetrains were the same between the two models
