Staples for trim
Am restoring the footwell kickboards in my 1800E. The vinyl trim is held to the hardboard with stubby staples with a 3mm leg. Try as I might I can't source these. Does anyone know a supplier?

Thanks Bob, but these suppliers only do 4mm. We need 3mm, otherwise we risk the leg of the staple poking through the vinyl. Good news is I found a supplier! Min order is 10,000, so will shortly be in a position to supply the entire Volvo community.
However now I'm having trouble finding a reasonably priced device to fire staples shorter than 4mm. It's never straightforward, is it? |

Back in the 1970's adhesive technology was in it's infancy and staples were the norm. When I did the same job as you on my 1800E and a similar job on a Morris Minor 1000 for my father in law in the late 1980's I used contact adhesive instead of staples.
Be careful not to get any on the surface of your vinyl, but with plenty of clamps, grips and strong clothes pegs to sandwich the hardboard/glue/vinyl between suitable strips of wood, the result was excellent and never came unstuck again! |

Not sure what you are trimming but you could use some extra material on the back to take up the 1mm? Any padding – this will also allow a little leeway.

Thanks Cassel and Bob. Yes, sleeping on this I decided to glue. I'm never likely to have to remove the vinyl and if I muck it up, Brookhouse do offer complete replacements at a pretty reasonable price.
Bob, thanks. Why didn't I think of that?😏 |

Been there! I would recommend gluing & staples to reinforce the grip.
That was the original procedure on a '54 Riley. Regards Bob (White spirit will remove any glue marks on the face side) Last edited by Bob Meadows; Jun 9th, 2020 at 11:16. |

Unless your vinyl has a foam backing consider a very thin foam scrim on the board first. That will also get you a fraction of leeway with the staples.
Martrim do 2mm scrim foam. They also do 4mm staples. https://www.martrim.co.uk/car-trimmi...scrim-foam.php I know the 3mm problem as I was going to do a couple of Amazon door cards. I seem to remember that I did find some at Machine Mart but they don't list them currently. Can't check as they are up in my garage and I haven't been there since the start of lock-down! |
