When you rebuild it, having cleaned the commutator, grease the thrust block using either a silicone based grease, or WD40 mixed with vaseline & a couple of drops of petrol - don't use copperease or copper based grease.

Make sure you get the thrust block the right way round as otherwise the mechanism jams solid! - ie it isn't idiot proof and can be fitted in the obverse position....you might well ask how I know?......hmmm extensive experience of being that accomplished idiot!

Stripped, checked, cleaned, silicone greased...no fault found or obvious??
Re-installed and now working again.
Think I may just purchase another second hand unit at some point along the way when opportunity arises and keep on stock as a precaution.
