Default 2018 XC60 Fuel Economy

Hi, I'm a newbie here so apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I'm also not very technical so please excuse my ignorance!

I've had a 2018 XC60 Momentum Pro for a few months now and I'm really pleased with it apart from abysmal economy. It's a D4 AWD automatic and while urban driving is quite good on economy, any longer runs are really poor. For example, I've just done a couple of journeys of 90 miles or so, partially on motorways with speeds varying between 40mph and around 75mph, so pretty steady. No heavy loads and no traffic hold ups but I still got just less than 40mpg, even in 'eco' mode. I know the car is heavy and AWD and aerodynamics aren't great but does this sound about right? I've seen other people's comments and reviews on car magazines quoting realistic figures more in the region of 50mpg for this type of journey.

Any comments/advice is appreciated, thanks.

My average is 42mpg which includes most driving, motorways give an average of around 50mpg.
Just for any caravanners 1320` in Spain gave an average of 28.7mpg. 1300 Kg van.
You are using both trip meters I take it for comparisons.i.e. the general average TA and overall average if not reset TM
Car is a 2018 XC60 Inspiration D5

Well you said it all ... heavy, awd and aerodynamics. Mine is FWD, also heavy but around 100kg less than yours and i have air suspension. It means my car lowers as you probably know, making less resistance to the wind.

I had a MY18 XC60 D4 AWD Automatic on 20” wheels for 17 months and covered 6194 miles in that time and the overall mpg was 40.81.

I always brim and calculate the fuel consumption - the best mpg was 46.1 on a trip to France in June, so long trip and hot weather, and the worst was 37.5 in January/February this year when you expect lower mpg and there was lots of short trips.

My previous 2 XC60’s returned slightly better figures over their time with me, but then they were front wheel drive.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm on 19" double spoke black alloys, so not sure if that makes a difference? From the responses it seems that most people are getting a better return than me, so I might have a word with the dealer and see what they've got to say, although I don't hold out much hope of help there. Someone else has told me that I will see better returns once the car's done over 10k miles? Would that seem likely?

Try runniing your tyres at the eco pressure as opposed to the comfort pressure -- typically it is about 37 psi as opposed to the low 30s.
The drive is much more positive so you might prefer it to the lower standards pressure.

You should get well over 40 mpg.

I have a T5 and regularly achieve 38mpg on longer motorway runs (if I maintain the speed limit).

About town mid 20s.

Covered c500 miles this week over half term worst on the motorway was 36 best 38. I'm happy with that, just ticked over 6000 miles today car is a year old mid December.

Annoyingly my annual service reminder is up but I won't be going into service for 5 or 6 weeks yet.
