If you are viewing, check what version OS and map are loaded.

For me the postcode search in my country works well, but here the smallest granularity for the postcode is the suburb. Bigger cities are split into postcode zones of around 20000 people.

Default 2004 upgrades?

Hi I promise I've been researching this all over but am still confused. All of the available upgrades appear to be for 2006 cars or newer. I have a 54 plate XC90 with a disc based sat nav system which is still showing a local hotel which was bulldozed over ten years ago. Can anyone advise firstly if I get an upgrade and from where please?

I recently updated my Satnav DVD on my 2004 XC90 as it had the original disk in it. The DVD I got is labelled Volvo RTI Europe VCC Part No. 31470159 XC90 MY03-06 .

The Europe set comes on 3 disks. The UK is on Disk A. Volvo sell the complete set but they aren't available as single disks and are really expensive. Googling XC90 Sat Nav Disk and also Volvo 31470159 should bring up some results.

You can read your nav version in the nav settings menu. It tells you what OS version is loaded and what map version is loaded. Look in Settings About. Report back what you see.

There are 2 nav systems in use - older and newer. The change happened with the facelift in 2007. So report back the date of manufacture (known as MY) and we can help further.

When I got my XC90 in February this year the first thing I did was research what map version was loaded (it was 2010) and then I ordered a 2015 map.
The new map disc also contains the current nav OS.

Inserting the new nav disc will first initiate an OS update and then (on my hard drive based nav) copy 12GB of map data to the hard drive. This takes time, around 3 hours. I connected a battery charger and left the ignition turned on to Acc for the duration. As my charger only delivers 5A and the car uses more than 5A in ACC pod I made sure that every possible accessory and lamp was turned off for the duration.

You have an EU map from 2004. That map is now 12 years out of date, you would certainly benefit from an update. How much you would benefit depends on where you live, where you drive, and how much the road network has changed in those ares in the last 12 years, and how often you use the nav.

Your nav OS software is v8.42; this will automatically be updated to the latest version when a newer map is inserted.

Given that your map is from 2004, this implies that your vehicle was built prior to or in 2004 and contains the earlier nav system (in use until 06-2006). It is possible the nav has never been upgraded post vehicle manufacture.

Your nav is known as the P2001 or MMM system, often written as MMM/P2001
Do not confuse it with the later system, which is MMM+, which appeared in the 2007 and newer vehicles

The current MMM/P2001 map is the 2015/2016 map, which consists of 4 x DVDs.
Volvo part number 31470159 1546

The OEM original price is around 185 EUR, here is an honest website selling the original Volvo DVDs:
http://www.kolumbus24.com/Navigation...680_4855_0.htm

Your local Volvo dealer might be more expensive... ring and find out

Some competing websites make a business of buying the original map DVDs, and selling copies for around 20 to 50 EUR.
This is known as pirating the software (reselling copied software for commercial gain at much much lower than the original price) and I do not support such practices.

When buying a new map, be aware of the pricing when selecting your seller. If the price for a 'new' map is too good to be true, then the seller may be selling pirated maps

BE AWARE that any copied DVD made using a DVD burner does NOT offer the same longevity and quality as a pressed DVD. Original DVDs are made using a pressing system, the optical reflectivity is higher and the laser does not have to work so hard. I have seen car nav systems fail to read burnt DVDs (copies) as the laser was old and weak and couldn't pickup the reflected light sufficiently, and a lot of errors resulted. A pressed DVD (original OEM DVD) on the same nav system was read without any issues, demonstrating the higher signal levels, and thus lower error levels on pressed DVDs.
So on older nav systems that may have a lot of operational hours on them, a pressed DVD will always work better, and will ensure your laser lasts longer as it does not have to work so hard.
You can work out your operational hours as follows:
Take the mileage and divide by a typical average MPH. Eg if your car has 100,000 miles and the average MPH is 30 MPH, then the car has 3,333 hours of operation. As the nav is always ready for use, the laser has been in use for 3,333 hours as well. The lasers in automotive systems are especially tough, designed to work in very high temperatures (typical automotive temperature ranges for electronics = -40C to +125C, whereas consumer = 0 to +85C) and high vibration levels but they do have a finite lifetime. And when they get old, the light output declines, and they struggle to read discs.
So be aware of this point.

Tip:
If you want original OEM map discs at good prices, consider a secondhand 1 or 2 year old map, instead of the current year's map version.
Check on eBay in your area for secondhand maps, you can often find original Volvo map DVDs from sellers that have purchased a newer map and no longer need the older map. They then sell the original older map at a good price.
Just ensure the map is labelled as suitable for XC90 06/2002 - 06/2006 (the years they used the MMM/P201 nav system)

Wow thank you Swiss really appreciated and certainly clears that one up for me thank you. I'll take your advice and look for a used set of older maps, I couldn't justify buying a new set but really appreciate your help thanks again you're a star!

I would disagree on the dates in question. My 2007 S60 T5 still has the MMM nav.

Car registration march 2007. I'll find the build date later.
