So, are these all the same? A Saab one is £200 while an xc90 one is £500?

Most unlikely....

As you would expect :

- There are different versions for 2 wheel drive cars and AWD cars which have the extra drive for the transfer box. They're not interchangeable.

- The bell housing casting is engine specific - i.e. a Saab Isuzu/GM 1.9TDi box is most unlikely to bolt up to a Volvo/Ricardo D5 block. It's likely that these could be swapped but it would be an experiment...

- The gear ratios I believe are the same but the final drive ratios will differ - especially between petrol and diesel models.

- Some of the guts are manufacturer specific - i.e. Volvo Neutral Control

You can however take components and swap them, I have read articles on here where people have done that and have also converted a 2WD box to a AWD box but the donor was from another Volvo D5. But this would only be economical if you have a experience to do this yourself, if you are paying a mechanic then simplest answer is a reconditioned and warranted box.

FYI £500 is very cheap for a good, warrantied XC90 AW55, I would expect to pay £750-ish, maybe more for a low miles one. I have done a few...

The Saab one will be cheaper as it's a lighter, lower powered car so the boxes are more reliable in that application - hence more available second hand.

I bought this one:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F362570058898

After looking for a few days & phoning every gearbox reconditioner about I settled on this one as it has low miles, looked clean & the seller answered all my questions to put my mind at ease!

Fingers crossed I’ll be bangin it in on Saturday- Sunday!

That's a bargain.... good result, although not sure why they have left the nearside shaft in?

When you do the swap - you must make sure you follow the correct procedure for loading the torque converter to the box, this is documented in the Haynes manual. Shout if you need it. If not followed you could destroy the ATF pump.

Also, a good opportunity to drain most of the old oil from the box by laying it on the floor bell housing down, same with the torque converter.

When fitted, best to make sure the adaptation memory is cleared, run the full procedure if you can.

If you look through my very early posts (2014) I did a write up on removing the box from a XC90 if that would be helpful.

Ive already read most of your posts regarding the gearbox, including the tip about loading the torque converter twice, is it that you load it clockwise til it falls in, then spin it again clockwise til a second click/further movement is heard?

Also the box is completely drained from being posted so I have this oil on the way:

http://www.tradetec-oil.co.uk/produc...on-oils/TT321/

It’s jws 3309 spec

I also have a core plug I just need to collect from Volvo.
Cheers!
