Slightly off topic but the BMW dealer has no legal grounds to do this - the car is not their property.

I must admit I did have a similar conversation with my wife, I wouldn't be devastated if Volvo confirm something substantial as it would have to be fixed at their cost and I would then have peace of mind that whatever it was shouldn't go again for a while.

I just need to convince them to let Volvo diagnose it. I think they will have to eventually, I don't see how they could possibly hope to fix the car and proceed with the sale otherwise. I'm in no hurry to get it so I might sit on the sales contract for a while and see what happens!

There arenow five categories for an MOT test.
Pass, advisory, minor, major, and dangerous.
If the car is deemed dangerous it is illegal to drive it away, even if there is some time remaining on the certificate.

It was at that point in time, as only a deposit had been paid.

Just had an update from the garage, they had it diagnosed (didn't ask how) and came back as a faulty steering angle sensor, which I believe is a common fault. They got a new sensor from Volvo and fitted it this morning and it's all good now.

So after a bit if a bumpy start I should be taking delivery on Friday afternoon!
