Insurance for a 242 GT
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a specific insurer that offers good deals on classic volvo's. I've recently bought a 1979 242 GT and want to know where is the best place to go regarding insurance. The obvious emphasis is on cost but I don't want to be given a scrap value should something happen, I can see myself having trouble as it is left hand drive I'm 24 and I want to use it as a commuter. My old 1972 1300GT Escort used to cost me about £250 2 years ago. Does the owners club offer anything? I know there are some ties with Chris Knott and Lancaster but as yet I haven't got round to phoning them. Regards Nick |

Hi,
Chris Knott does a good deal when you are a paid up member of VOC and/or have modifications to your car. There are a couple of others who advertise on the site that are recommended too. Search and use insurance and knott for the terms and you'll find the topics covering the other brokers.. Des. . .

Nick,
Please post some pictures, I really like the 242. Not Volvo-specifc, but I recommend Adrian Flux insurance for out-of-the- ordinary cars. Unlike most insurers, they're not scared of wierd/old/fast cars. My modified 1970 Scimitar (270bhp 4.6 V8) costs £400 fully comp, agreed value including business use. But, sadly, I am a little older than you! Cheers John |

Footman James are pretty good too.
My 262C was £136 a year fully comp with breakdown cover and agreed value with a 8k miles a year allowance. The 760 is £220 a year with the same but no mileage limit (and the agreed value is lower). But................ I am 10 years older than you! |

So insuring an american car that was built in sweden with a bunch of useless UK insurance companies is a test of anyones patience!
I spoke to lots of people so far. Flux is still the most appealing but maybe not the cheapest, £346 as a classic with a 5k mile limit £401 as a normal car without a mileage limit Sureterm £299 as a classic, (need to confirm whether this wil retain my ncb or not) Gonna try footman James tomorrow but I don't think they deal with imports, norwich union were unable to quote this evening as their motor underwriting support team had already finished. I don't think I'll even bother contacting chris knott as the car is a modified import, the 242 has now grown a B23ET engine under the bonnet and a homemade exhaust running on an aftermarked mappable ECU. Can anyone think of anybody else worth considering, I'm hoping I can find something like a classic euro policy, for classic european cars. Else I might just try and insure it as it is on the log book: Volvo Saloon 2-Axle-Rigid Body Yellow LOL what a joke! Laters Nick |
