Besides the fuel rail pressure test, there are a number of other basic tests, did they give you an invoice stating exactly what tests they had carried out or just a receipt saying "Investigate Hot Starting" or similar and "NFF at time of test" or similar, in other words, it didn't play up for them (NFF = No fault Found) so they couldn't pinpoint the fault but were saying it was the starter so they could sound as if they knew what the problem was.

No, they did not give me an invoice saying what tests they did to determine this only saying on the invoice: 'starter motor starting to fail plus 1-hour labour'.

Well, thank you all for your help, I will email them tomorrow asking what tests they did to come up with this conclusion whilst also saying I am not convinced, knowing my luck it would be more expensive lol!

thank you.

It's a shame you weren't a bit closer, i suspect this is a fault that would be easily found on basic checks alone.

These days if they can't plug it into a generic computer/code-reader then they're stumped.

Let us know how you get on with your email, might be worth asking them if they checked the rotor arm, dizzy cap, HT leads and spark plugs and what the gap was on the spark plugs.

Good luck anyway!

Bless you, and you are quite right, no computer diagnostics for me cost a fortune anyway if anything goes wrong I will try and keep to my 'classic'. My BIL has a hybrid Lexus lovely car but when it goes wrong enough said!

You are not too far away my cousin lives in Suffolk however, will heed your advice and will let you know.

Always had Volvos and this one is worth looking after, just passed its MOT with no advisories as has been for the last three years. 1996 7 seater estate 2.3 ti pretty good condition for year just run in by all accounts 201,200 miles and certainly worth looking after .....

Kind regards, Dee

Let's hope they pull their finger out in that garage and realise they've sold you short on their diagnostics!

Keep me posted about what happens, if you happen to be visiting your BIL in the not too distant future, feel free to drop round on your way and i'll have a quick look for you - Didcot is a bit far for me to travel these days sadly although i get my good days once in a while but never really know when!
