Default Loss of power to wheels but not revs?

Hello,

New to this site but wondering if anyone has had the same issue. When doing around 70 in 6th (V50) occasionally my revs shoot right up but no power is getting to the wheels? its as if i have my foot on the clutch and the accelerator. it tends to do this more if i have accelerated quickly and rectifies if i take my foot off for a couple of seconds. Took it to a garage and they thrashed it to see if the clutch would go but it was fine. No error messages pop up on the dash.

Cheers for any advice

Dan

I'm guessing its manual gearbox?

Something more about car? Engine, age, mileage?

On the face of it it sounds like 6th is coming out of engagement whilst still being in mesh, lifting off is loading in opposing direction thus sliding it back in. Youd expect to hear a noise, but then maybe volvo boxes work in a funny way, my V70 can seem to be in third if you dont push it all the way home but gives no drive or noise, you only know because of the lack od drive, and often the stick waggles about. Its engaged, but not transferring.

This is called surging, your clutch has had it. It’s a common failure on the diesel V50’s, C30’s, S40’s and C70’s with a manual gearbox. You’re going to need a new Clutch assembly. You’ll be looking somewhere in the area of £850-£1000 to have it rectified. Make sure the Friction plate, Dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder are changed and then all will be well again. My V50 did it but the garage I bought it off stumped up for it and it cost £860 four years ago.

While they’ve got the flywheel off, get em to check the condition of the crank oil seal too. Mine started to leak five months after

Cheers
