Rear Subframe Bush Replacement
Hello XC90 owners,
I've bought a pair of rear subframe front mounting bushes (Part no. 30645393 or new number 30666697). These are the main bushes which connect the subframe to the body of the car. Volvo say these two front bushes are cracked. My 2005 model UK spec D5 AWD car has done about 130 000 miles. The Haynes Manual describes how to remove the subframe - it's a big job - but not how to remove and replace the bushes. I don't want to drop the rear subframe and I believe/ hope it is possible to replace these bushes without dropping/removing the rear subframe.. Am I right in thinking that? If that is the case, is anyone on this forum able to assist and describe the procedure and what tools are required? Thanking you all in advance. Aidan |

I think the hardest part will be removing the old bushings. If they are anything like the front subframe bushings they are very difficult to get out. Basically you have to burn/hack them out. Like This:

Of course there is a Volvo special tool, but a universal bearing/hub puller might do the job if you can get it onto the part.

Another thought I had after watching the YouTube link you sent was that removing the bushing might possibly not be not too bad if I use a hole saw to cut out the centre of the bush to aid collapsing the rest of the bush from the outside in. But I'm not sure how to press the new bushing into place with the subframe still on the car. Might a trolley jack be sufficient to press a greased bushing up into place? Regards Aidan |

A slide hammer system will extract but not insert. The system I suggested, with its forcing screw, can be used to press in the new part.
