I've just come back from a drive and I threw a microfibre cloth on the sensor and can confirm that it is the light sensor as well as the alarm set indicator.
It dimmed and undimmed the Sensus screen within three seconds of being covered and uncovered. If yours doesn't undim within three seconds of being uncovered, my money is on it being faulty. Hope that helps.
