Default Turbo for 940 2.0l Wentworth

Hi looking for either a second hand good working turbo, a reconditioned one or somewhere I can have mine sent away and reconditioned. Or I suppose a kit to do it if it’s possible yourself? Any advice or suggestions? Thanks

I'd second that!

Just going to a 15G (one up in the td04 range) made a big difference and almost no increase in lag. Mind you I was running around 14psi (towards the top of both in terms of the efficiency map)

Also worth looking at buying a new core - much cheaper than buying a whole turbo and changes all the vital bits. All you need in the way of specialist tools is a set of large circlip pliars. Did mine in a few hrs with a willing 'volunteer' to help.

I found core swap was the best compromise in terms of keeping cost down/quality up after looking at doing it myself/sending it away/new blower.

There are some very good guides on how to do a core swap, just search the web for 'td04 core swap' - it's a common turbo on a great many models so loads of write ups out there. Also good time to do banjo seals and drain gaskets.

Ok that looks easy to do, just watched a vid, so is my turbo a td04, is there any other info I need when looking for the part? What boos pressure does that run at then as standard?

Also out of interest does a T5 turbo bolt straight on? What would that then give?

Thanks

If your turbo has a water feed it is a td04 (as long as it's still the stock one) the garrets were oil cooled so only two lines, td04 is water cooled oil lube'd so 4 lines. (Oil is in at 12 Oclock - out at 6, water is In/Out at 3 and 9 Oclock - can never rember which way the flow is).

A 15g off an 850 will requir 'clocking' - you split the two halves and then rotate the cold side so it points in the same direction as the 13c on there currently. If you put the two side by side it is pretty apparent what needs doing. You will most likely need to ditch the alignment pin - I didn't run with one for over a yr and no problems. Alternative is drill the hot side for the pin in the correct place - your call.

Biggest tip I can give is you either need a strong friend or bench mount vice to actually split the thing. The circlip is STRONG! (Get a decent circlip pliar set and WEAR EYE PROTECTION)

As stock the 13c is pretty much out of puff at 15psi - off the end of the efficiency map. 15 is a little higher but at say 14 psi the 15 will be blowing colder than the 13 so more potential power and less strain on the intercooler.

If you want to swap for the Garret you will most likely need an external oil cooler - the 740's used to have them.

From personal experience I got a Mellet core (15g) and a knackered 15g turbo from an 850 for cheap on ebay (bearing was shot). Split the knackered one, compressor housing (cold side) onto the new core then fitted it into the turbine housing (hot side) from my old turbo. Few hrs work with many tea breaks
