Default Super Unleaded ?

I seem to recall it says somewhere in the instruction manual that the T5 is supposed to run on 98 RON unleaded (ie Super unleaded). For a long time I have used standard 95RON but after a few tanks of Sainsburys super (97 RON) I noticed the MPG picking up a bit. I'm now trying the full blown Shell Super unleaded (98 RON) and it seems better still. Haven't had a chance to really try performance yet but will be having a blast on closed roads this weekend. Has anybody any views of what is the best juice to use?

Can't add anything re V50, but my previous car (V70 2.4 170) did run much better on Shell OPtimax although I didn't use it all the time as too expensive.
Performance was better and also mpg.

Most of time I was using Shell 95 with the odd tank of supermarket stuff once in a while if prices were right.

In my experience, to get benefit of 98RON after using std 95 RON, you really need to run a few tankfuls through.

Over life of car (70k miles)I averaged 36.5 mpg, mostly on 95RON.

As I understand the technology, if the cars have a knock sensor for the ECU, then it will advance the ignition timing to the pinking point, then back off a bit, so if you're using 97/98 octane, you'll get more advance to make better use of the fuel's burning characteristics.
Hence more power, or if you're not always using the power, more mgp.

I stand to be corrected on this explanation!!
