Default Crankcase Overfill

I have searched this forum and could not find a problem/condition exactly like mine, then again maybe not a problem afterall. The car is a 66 122S with 3speed auto - recently obtained. Changed the oil last weekend with filter and with 4 quarts there is about an inch above the dipstick fill high fill mark. Should I drain the crankcase and refill to top or just below the indicator high mark or let it be. I seem to think that in the past I have read that blow by problems could arise then again maybe not. Thanks, Russ

Drain and refill to mark. When oil is over full the crank splashes it around too much, some up the bores, which isn't good.
Cleaner to drop all of the oil into a clean bowl and then top up bit by bit than trying to drop just a quart out.
B18 capacity is 8 US pints but you seem to have overdone it possibly by using a large can.
Oil capacity with filter: 3.75 liters (8 US pints)

Its easy done mate..don't beat yourself up..important not to overfill in fact its worse in a lot of cases than overfilling. Let a bit out reading your post you about a litre too full.
You can extract it out of the dip stick tube if you have the kit or just undo the sump plug and slowly let it leak out...good luck

Thanks Cliverly. I filled from a new 4 quart/1 gallon container. Makes me wonder if the new oil filter actually filled. Guess there is only one way to find out. UGG!

You should always fill your filter before fitting B18/b20

Forum;

I agree with Arcturus...I always pre-fill the replacement Oil Filter!...sure, it's difficult to replace OF on some vehicles and the manipulation and contortions required before it can be threaded into place, can result is some spillage, but access is very good on a B18/20, so I find spills are rare...

...and having pre-filled, pressure comes up, and the Oil Indicator goes off much sooner or first Start.

Cheers
