Does anyone know where the exhaust manifold on the 10 Valve engines break? I was thinking of having it welded instead of replaced. Mine blows more when cold but I can't find exactly where it is. I've got the car on ramps and I'm going to let off a smoke pellet under it to see if the exhaust gases will blow away the smoke. Watch this space.

Recenlty had mine done - it went on the flexible coupling just after the manifold. Started with same symptom - blowing when cold but ok when warm then got progressively worse.

Is yours the later one with the flexi as part of the cat pipe or the earlier one with the flexi integral to the manifold?

If it's the early one non-genuines are readily available (£135 on ebay). If it's the later one - dig deep, believe me, I searched everywhere.

Good luck

Hi, mine is the one with the integral flexi coupler on the manifold side....thankfully. I have spied the ones on eBay although they do look a bit roughly made, but my car ain't gonna run forever so it might be a reasonable buy.

Ahh. Lucky you, mines only 2 months younger than yours (96 model tho') and I couldn't believe the prices I was being quoted - up to £600 just for the parts! Got it fitted for £300 in the end. I still reckon favourite area to check for leak is the flexy though.

You probably already know but alt to ebay is
http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com they list them on their website and seemed quite helpful when I was looking for mine

Tip: when looking for exhaust leaks.

Squirt some ReDex into the inlet manifold, usually you can do this if you remove a vacuum hose and squirt via the hole. The smoke it makes will help locate the leak (and decoke the engine a bit).
Also helps to have someone partially block the end of the exhaust to increase the backpressure.

Thumbs up

Well I found the leaks. There are two on the underside of the manifold and are in the creases where the 5 pipes join into one, and MIGHT be "weldable". I could feel hot gas blasting out onto the back of my hand. So I'll speak nice to my mate and see if We can weld it at his seeing as it's easy access. I am shelling out £100's every time this car needs something done now and this could help cut costs. Drivers door strap went crunch and broke today too! I guess I can get them on eBay?

Hi,

I got one off eBay when I first got my 850, it's been fine so far. It did need a little filing down to stop it 'clicking' as it sat in the half-way groove if you see what I mean...

Cheers, Pete
