I think that's similar to many formerly desirable UK holiday locations, if you're going to live on benefits you might as well do it by the seaside. We went to Ramsgate for a holiday a few years back, beautiful apartment in a beautiful building, just a shame that a lot of the old hotels and guesthouses have now become hostels full of benefit claimants.

That's not to denigrate all benefits claimants, especially those who live by the sea because they grew up there, but ...

The problem with staying in Britain, along with the weather, is that every town looks the same. Same shops, same chain restaurants, all interspersed with charity shops, hairdressers, nail bars and takeaways. It's nice to go somewhere where everything is different.
And in Britain you have to pay to park everywhere you stop.

Back to Weston-s-M (in a manner of speaking).

It is just not Weston that had ended up like this. Far too many 'popular resorts' have gone that way (though I believe that Blackpool is the worst?) because they seem to be at the end of a convenient railway line. No doubt, many of the local B&B establishments have found that their 'holiday lets' could be let out all year by taking in people who live on benefits - instead of just relying on 'holiday trade'. Who can blame them for wanting to make money all the year round rather than just six weeks of the year?

And I think it would not be unreasonable to say that a lot of this 'long-term resident' is quite often on some sort of substance or other (be it, at best, alcohol; or, at worst, something much 'harder') and get their rent paid for them by the government (not that I'm going to go into the politics of that!).

So many 'popular' coastal towns around the country have ended up like this as greater percentages of people go abroad for their holidays now as they find that they get more decent weather instead of the usual summer holiday weather that one can expect in the UK. Personally, I think that August is a the wrong time to have a holiday in the UK and that July weather is usually more dependable! But that's beside the point!

Just back from our holiday- 11 days in the caravan- balloch/glen Nevis/ Bo'ness- just under 900 miles in total and the v70 pulled perfectly!!! Will miss it when we sell it in a month or so.

Highlight was hiking up Ben Nevis with my family including our 11 year old son and 9 yr old daughter!

Must say when your towing a caravan you become very, very aware of the shocking state our roads are in.

Holiday done, next motorbike license & change the Volvo

Tell me about the V70 please?

My Dad is looking to buy a V70, he deeply regrets absconding to BMW after 30 odd years of Volvo ownership, I did warn him!

My v70 is the 2.4d 175bhp d5 engine. I think it's got the best of both worlds with performance and economy.

Damn, just seen where you are, waay up North! He would have been interested in a D5, discussed it with him when I was last down in Wales. Good luck with your sale

Counting down to my holiday in September now, very excited!

Has anyone crossed the border into Canada on foot? I am assuming you can't take the American hire car over. I am just checking out the Niagra Falls webpage

We've been quite lucky this year, went on a cruise to Cuba, Panama etc in Feb, and we've just booked to go to Tenerife for a (hopefully) late sun holiday in a couple of months. Then straight off to the Isle of Wight for a few days with a bunch of friends.
