Radio troubles
Hi there, I'm still very new to this!
So basically when I bought my '88 240GL, somebody had bodged in an aftermarket radio which quite frankly is absolute rubbish. I'm finding it really hard to operate and the radio will often pause very briefly every couple of seconds which is very annoying and to top it off, it is only loosely pushed into the dashboard because some careless person has managed to snap off all the screw mountings. I'm one for liking everything as original as possible so I bought a Volvo TD-603 radio with mountings in tact and all but I feel like I'll run into trouble wiring it up. The aftermarket radio has all the wires (except antenna) going into one socket on the back of the set, power and speaker output going into the same socket but I have found out that the TD-603 has the power going into the big rectangular socket and the sound output coming from a 6 pin DIN connector which leads into an amplifier. The amplifier seems to have an identical rectangular connector which I guess serves as power and output to the speakers. I don't know where the amp is located and whether a previous owner who bodged in the new radio removed the amp or left it be? So my question at the moment is where the amp is or should be located? Probably more questions to come once I find it! Thanks Peter |

Amp should most likely be mounted at the back of that cubbyhole in front of the gear stick. If your cubbyhole is only 4 inches deep with cold flat metal at the end, the amp is still there. If the cubbyhole is 7 inches deep = no amp. It can be retrofitted.
Good luck in your searching! Did your previous owner use an ISO connector to wire in his after-market radio? If so, you can get a converter harness. Kind regards Lucien |
