I had this issue too, if you go into the volume settings & put it on say 20 then press the enter key on the remote it should start working.

In Britain, yes (unfortunately). But this definitely does NOT apply in France and Spain. New roads constantly being built.

BTW another question: Does the car have its own memory in addition to the DVD discs? I suppose it must have, for storing saved locations. But it also seems to save a route. If I put in Disk A, which covers N Europe and Italy, but not UK, I can plot a whole route to somewhere in Italy. If I then put in Disc B (UK, France, Spain), I can still view that whole route to Italy, but not choose another destination in Italy.

Yes this is exact the same Effect on my Nav.
Version 2013 works fine with POI / Placename
Version 2015 ( from SatNav ) no Text and no POI

Did you ever find anything out about the MMM memory failure?
I've just had the same DTC after the RTi freaked out one day, although it's all working and remember lastvten locations, the unit is forgetting the custom defaults that I've set, i.e., Female voice not Male, UK miles, not km etc.

No, never heard about memory failure.
Instead, I have some problems in common with others with the 2017 discs:
- male voice not working, only female
- POIs not displayed in the map
- placenames not displayed in the map

Did anyone solve this issues?

While searching out another issue, I have just discovered that Volvo have in fact released updated DVDs (Week 48 2016 MAP Data) for the MMM2, I have been given a discounted price by my parts guy of £76.50.
