Question Remote won't lock but, will unlock.

Hello Volvo Gurus,

My wife's V50 2.0d (an early one) developed a central locking problem about a week ago.

Symptoms as follows (and are consistent - i.e. not intermittent):-

It won't lock (any doors) using the remote.
It will unlock all doors using the remote.
It will lock and unlock all the doors from the buttons inside.

Weird!

I think the remote is fine ('cos it unlocks), and the loom and locks are ok ('cos it locks/unlocks from inside). So, I'm at a bit of a loss.

Other things I noticed are:-
It stopped flashing the indicators when remote locking about 3 months ago (which I thought was odd at the time but, it still locked the car fine - 'till now).
I have seen the famous "remote battery voltage low" message a few times - but, not recently.

Any ideas at all?

Tia

Hi
Does the button on your remote for the "LOCK" actually click? when you press it

I had a problem on mine:-

Like your link Iain and your suggestion - which turned out to be the problem(slightly embarrassed )

The button did seem to make the right noise and had the right "feel" - so I'd not thought take it further than squeezing it REALLY hard (while scrunching up my face and chanting "work damn you, work" under my breath).

But, inspired by your post I took my fob to bits and pressed the microswitch directly with a dibbler (i.e. without the button or rubber sheet in place) and "close sesame" it locked just fine.

I then reassembled the remote with button etc in place and it still works.
Result. (Should the switch be on the way out I now know how to replace it too.)

Thanks!

Mark

BTW - how to lock your v50 if the remote lock doesn't work.

1/ Do not read any further if you are the sort of person who is likely to leave keys in the car while using this technique to lock it!
2/ Do not talk about this technique with the sort of person who is likely to leave keys in the car while using this technique to lock it.

2/ close all doors and windows
3/ exit car and press the "lock all doors button" (the one with the closed padlock symbol)
4/ smartly shut drivers door (if you're not quick enough the locks will open again before it closes).

5/ Forget steps 3 and 4 if you are the sort of person who is likely to leave keys in the car while using this technique to lock it.

Smile Faulty button

Hi All,

I've just taken my fob apart and cleaned it out and this has improved the locking slightly. Behind the button is a rubber membrane that was full of grit. I also noticed that the battery contacts inside the fob were pitted and blackened, so cleaned these up too.

But, yes definitely a dodgy lock button was the cause, after eventually finding the spare (broken case) and swapping the cases around to have a good case and good locking but all is well.
