V40 1.9 newbie
Hi all, I have bought a 2001 V40 1.9d
I'm impressed with the build quality, everything works! It's on 164k miles and the clutch is nearly worn out, can anyone tell me if this is a DMF clutch and whether a new flywheel would be necessary? I know the only way to know for sure is to take it out and look but what are peoples experiences of these for wear? Anything particular to know about these V40s? I notice 2nd gear is a real tyre shredder with the torque available, is this normal? Thanks all. |

I got my clutch and dmf replaced not long after getting mine last year. The clutch was down to the rivits and the flywheel had 10mm of play. It was either £700 or £750 all in at local Indy.
On mine 1st gear is useless as just spins the tyres so I short shift into second. Maybe your front tyres are low quality?

DMF clutch
Hello,
your car has probably a DMF.You can see it if the clutch cylinder is at the inside between flywheel and gearbox.Only the bleeding nippel is on the outside of the gearbox. And yes I know it is expensive but it is worth it.I did not and regret it already. Some on this forum exchange the DMF and complete clutch with one of the V70 (i think).Check the messages on the forum on how they do it. Have fun. |

I actually really like this V40. I'm thinking of getting new clutch/flywheel and fitting a tow-bar but worried about the rust situation. Bodywork is starting to go at the bottom corner of back doors and rusty underneath.
What are these cars like for mot fail rust? (sills, suspension points etc.) Planning on cleaning the EGR at weekend, any points to note? It hesitates around 2200 rpm. |

Try using a decent quality pipe wrench (one without too much play in the jaws). Whilst you'll need to use plenty of brute force, go carefully - the alloy inlet manifold could easily be damaged and turn a crappy job into a really, really crappy one! The metal EGR gasket and rubber shut off valve seal can be bought cheaply from Renault (a search on this forum should find the equivalent part numbers) Plenty of other info on the forum to help if you have a good search.

[QUOTE=HalV40;2275409]I actually really like this V40. I'm thinking of getting new clutch/flywheel and fitting a tow-bar but worried about the rust situation. Bodywork is starting to go at the bottom corner of back doors and rusty underneath.
What are these cars like for mot fail rust? (sills, suspension points etc.) Worth having a look at Gatos 'Buyers Guide' (it is a 'sticky' on the site) for an excellent summary of V40 'issues.' But I have been pleasantly surprised by the V40 interms of bodywork. My 2003 model has done over 190K. Other than for corrosion developing in the exhause a couple of years ago serious rust has not appeared to be an issue other than for smaller items like bolts and suchlike. Also the bonnet is susceptible to rust spots in my experience as a result of chipping from stones, etc. Others have had issues with the radiator (in particular the connection with the water pipe and the radiator itself) so I would suggest you inspect for this as it can result in severe damage. However I would think these are not uncommon issues for any car of this age and/or mileage, |

And as it states in the guide "Bottom hose clamp is a weakness so get stainless one!"
