Default s60 d5 alternator rattle.

after the new engine has been fitted i have now got a rattle on the alternator, ( well this is what the dealers who fitted the engine believe), they have advised me that they would not be responseable for this as they only remove and refit the item on the engine change,

this is where it gets interesting, after speaking to them they say this item is wear and tear but i have never had this on any car previously, also the alternator has been dropped or damaged on the refit the casing has been broken on the end of the alternator and new casing is being fitted,

whats the course of action,
do i spend money out of my pocket to try and prove that the damage has been cause by them

contact my insurance company and tell them of my dissatisfaction in the repairs done and the problems i am having,

or let them investigate and locate the problem which they have offered to do while fixing other issues on the car for free, but the service manager has said that he does not believe it has been caused from it being damaged.

also has any one else had a problem like this previously i need to know if this is a common issue on the alternators

Well if they broke it by dropping it then they should be replacing it, damn cheeky for them to say otherwise!

I'd contact your insurace company and make the complaint through them (assuming they paid for the engine)

they believe it is the pulley on the end of the alt that is causing the noise which they are saying is wear and tear but i have never changed one on any other car nore heard anyone else doing so either,

V70 2.5 petrol auto, 1999. 100k

I also have the alternator rattle and I am currently waiting for the pulley/clutch end of the alternator to arrive to have it replaced.

It is most apparent on tick-over, where it rises and falls over a 20 second or so interval. Once the car is revved, the noise is not audible.

A recent poster had his fixed by a Bosch service centre for £50, though he had to take the alternator in.

My independant has quoted me £140 for the fix which includes removing the alternator, pulling its bearing and replacing with a new one..

I don't think its a common fault, but is clearly one which does exist.

It seems to me that if your alternator was obviously damaged by the dealer, then you can make a strong case that they also damaged the pulley bearing, after all, if the alternator dropped from say 4 ft. onto the pulley end, then its quite possible.

It might be of course that the noise is now only apparent because they have changed the tension on the auxilliary belt and thus stressed the bearing a bit more.

I would dig my heels in and make a fuss!

Cheers, Terry

the car is a 53 plate s60 with 83k on the clock, mine does the opposit tho it gets louder with more revs.

at least they have offered to do the labour envolved in changing it free of charge if it is shown to be wear and tear,

If it is a Bosch alternator then you can source the bearing direct from a 'Bosch service centre' for £50.

Cheers, Terry

PS..for your interest, here's some info' on how to do it:
