Rust accumulation accurs, then when you use the car and your brakes the rust gets scrubbed off and the whole process starts again. Its this process that causes the scoring, I'm guessing that you used to do more mileage than you do now, in which case the rust never had time to accumulate in the first place.
That's my opinion.

How does your usage and external parking compare to bobby2000's post?

My Volvo XC90 did 75k before needing discs and pads. Our old V40 was always parked outside but never needed either discs or pads in 30k. Mileage was about 12k a year.

When i viewed my V60 at the dealer i noticed that the front discs were looking a bit corroded & mentioned it to the salesman, the car was due a service & mot anyway so he said the workshop would sort it,to my amazement when i went to collect it they had replaced the front & rear disc's & pads, the car had only covered 33,000 miles & was just over 3 years old,i didnt replace the front discs on my skoda octavia until 55000 miles & that was due to corrosion on the inside face & the rear discs at 75000 miles.

It's all been said really, but I would summarise:

- If you are a low speed, light driver then the rear brakes do most of the work which. If the car is parked outside for a few days at a time without use, rust spots on the discs can result in scoring.

- Dealer has noted it, they may as well have also noted soot deposits at the end of your exhaust pipe and an accumulation of grit on the drivers floor mat.... if the brakes are working okay then there is no reason to change the discs or pads. The pads will continue to wear in to the discs.

- Probably the best thing you can do is once a month or so - thrash it - do 3 or 4 hard braking actions from say 60 to 10 mph to get the discs hot and the glaze off them.

My experience is non-genuine discs and pads are much more likely to do this than Volvo ones - but as you've done 9,500 miles you will still have the factory parts.

probably similar, as all my cars have been, but in my opinion this usage should not cause scoring on the discs.

eg my MX5 is nearly 4 years old and done only 10,000mls with no scoring, and that's Japanese steel !!
