But how many people pay main dealer prices to have out of warranty cars serviced? None of my used cars have ever gone to a dealer for routine servicing.
As for the RICA...RICA themselves say they need the ECU to re-map: there's no plug 'n' play option.

All that is fine if you never update the ECU software. All I'm saying is that as an incentive to use Volvo dealers for servicing, they offer two things. Free software updates for the car and continuing free membership of the Volvo Recovery service (whatever it's called). You can forgo these incentives and if you do you could have a tuning rewrite of the ECU by a 3rd party and it would be safe from being overwritten. I don't know what value one can put on ECU software updates but I do know that the alternative recovery service was costing me £100 a year so I can afford to overpay £100 on a Volvo service and still break even.
